Laying the Foundation

One of the key aspects of the training is that the partnership success program is delivered in bite size portions.

Our mentor John Thornhill is careful to deliver our lesson in a timely manner in smaller portions that builds upon what is learned in the previous lessons.

I consider this a characteristic of a seasoned professional; it takes a well developed understanding of the subject to have a delivery system that helps everyone while demonstrating an appreciation for inexperience of others.  It is important that teachers are conscious of the fact that many people get overwhelmed and may just frustrated with the technicalities if the subject matter is delivered without any consideration for the many challenges one might encounter in setting up a website.

The first part of our lessons titled laying the foundation, tells the story about foundations.

My understanding of this lesson reminded me of my engineering background, I know to build any structure that is long lasting it is important to lay a proper foundation. So our Partnership for Success program takes care of the foundation matters

  • Selecting and registering a Domain
  • Get Hosting for your website
  • Logging in and using Control Panel

It is said if you are going to build an online presence, it is essential to select and registering a domain. Not having a domain of your own while it will not hinder an online presence; it is important to lay the proper foundation for lasting success.

At some point you will need a domain, so why not build it once and make it last.

Now to make your website visible, your website must be hosted somewhere so along with registering a domain you must host your site somewhere.  Our partnership for success have some specific recommendation but by no means having your website hosted elsewhere will not interfere with your progress or participation with the program.

The cPanel or Control Panel is just it as it says because it like the central nervous system for your website. The cPanel is a feature carried by the web hosting facilities and it is an extremely useful utility, because it allows a seamless transition with the installation of your blog site on to the Internet.

It is my understanding after purchasing a website and having the files on your personal computer will not make your website become visible on the internet.

There must be a system of transitioning that information from your desktop computer and from the cPanel utility to the proper Public_html folder so that it can be visible on the internet.

The hosting site provides the servers to make this  possible.

The control panel provide a visible portal where newbies and experts alike can just click the application needed and directed to into the public_html folder.

My WordPress blog became visible by activating the WP application; just one click and by directing the file into a folder of my choosing. In fact WordPress, SQL database and PHP applications are all visible from the cPanel which can be installed in a similar manner.

These are the first steps in the journey to building my online presence and a giant toward success.
